Europeans are seeking land and the New World has plenty. Among those who choose to leave home and family is Robert Steele. An Irish lad of sixteen, he sails for the colony of Carolina. Arriving alone in Charles Towne in 1740 he secures his contract as an indentured servant to businessman Mr. John Ward who assigns him to a land surveyor. He knows that fulfilling a family dream will require hard work and he is determine to prove that he is capable.
Robert makes new friends, witness’s slavery for the first time, starts on a journey into the “backcountry” of Carolina, and encounters alligators, snakes, quick sand, buffalo, and the native inhabitants. He learns a new trade that enables him to find his way in a new land. Robert and his friend Will Amey, discover their will to survive when captured by Cherokee Indians and make their desperate escape.
During this time he meets and is enchanted by the beautiful Molly Ward, the daughter of his employer. He establishes his worth and dependability. And in the roughest of times, he recalls his father’s words, “Remember who you are.”
